Gary Roberts - UFA

This is my first attempt at blogging. I am a avid poster on The Pensunderground.com and Yahoo Answers (Y!A). You may know me as Manda, Amanda or Pensgirl86. I am 22 years old and live just outside of Pittsburgh, PA in a town called Latrobe. I am attending Westmoreland Community College and pursing a Liberals Arts degree. I was raised a Penguin fan during the Mario Lemieux era. So without further ado….this is the article I wrote about one of my favorite Pens plays. Mr. Gary Roberts.

Gary Roberts

On May 23, 1966 Mr. Gary Roberts was put on this earth by the Hockey Gods. MR. Roberts was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 27, 2007 for Noah Welch. He signed a 1 year deal with the Penguins for $2.5 million. Mr. Roberts is a force to be reckoned with at the age of 41, Gary is one of the oldest AND most physical players in the NHL. This season he became the oldest NHL player to register multiple goals in a single playoff game.

Besides the physical on-ice presence that Gary Roberts brings to a team, his work ethic off the ice is just as important. A team as young as the Pittsburgh Penguins are can never have too many role models in the locker room. Simply put, Gary Roberts has been nothing but a class act, on and off the ice since coming to Pittsburgh.

He has the stats to back up his bravado:

In the short time Gary Roberts has joined the elite group of flightless birds; he has become one of the fans favorite players. Fans have adopted Robertisms, i.e. WWGRD (What would Gary Roberts do?) or sayings such as, Gary Roberts CAN believe it's not butter, every day; Gary Roberts meditates for one hour. This is the only time the rest of the NHL can relax, and Georges Laraque named his fists Gary and Roberts

This Video pretty much sums up why Mr. Roberts is an asset to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

WWGRD? The question now becomes “What will Gary Roberts do?” If the Pittsburgh Penguins accomplish the awesome task of winning the Stanley Cup, will Mr. Roberts retire for from the NHL forever? What if the Pens fall short of the Cup this year, will he still walk away; or will he sign another one year contract in hopes of retiring a champion.
